Samsung Electronics Union votes to strike, fears to affect global semiconductor supply chain

China United News,19/03/2026.According to the voting results of over 66000 members of the Samsung Electronics Union in South Korea, 93.1% of the union members support the strike. If there are no significant changes, members of the Samsung Electronics Union will go on a comprehensive strike from May 21st to June 7th. As one of the world's largest memory chip manufacturers, if Samsung Electronics goes on strike, it will not only impact the Korean semiconductor industry, but also affect the stability of the global chip production and supply chain.

On March 18th, Yonhap News Agency reported that the Samsung Electronics Workers' Union plans to hold a rally on April 23rd, demanding that the management ensure the transparency of performance bonus payment standards, abolish the upper limit of performance bonuses, raise wages by 7%, and continue the struggle until the May general strike.

If the general strike of the labor union takes place, it will be the second strike by Samsung Electronics' labor union after two years since July 2024, and also the second strike since the company's establishment.

Based on the current situation, if both labor and management are unable to complete negotiations within the deadline set by the union, Samsung Electronics may face the largest strike in history. Analysts believe that Samsung Electronics is one of the world's largest memory chip manufacturers, and a strike would not only impact the Korean semiconductor industry, but also affect the stability of the global chip supply chain.

According to media analysis here, the brewing large-scale strike may affect half of the production capacity of the semiconductor factory located in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. If the strike lasts for two to three weeks, Samsung Electronics may suffer losses of $3.4 billion to $6.8 billion.
