The Middle East war has led to a sharp rise in oil prices in Hong Kong, causing some Hong Kong cars to "go north to refuel"

China United News Network, March 19, 2026: Affected by the situation in the Middle East, international oil prices continue to fluctuate. Due to the significant difference in gasoline retail prices between Hong Kong and mainland China, some Hong Kong residents have resorted to going north to refuel. Regarding the rise in international oil prices, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam stated on the 17th that various departments and their subordinate units of the SAR government have taken action, including the Competition Commission under the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, which is closely monitoring market operations. If any violations of fair competition, cooperative pricing and other behaviors are found, they will exercise their powers in accordance with the law.

According to the oil price trend page of the Hong Kong Consumer Council's website "Oil Price Information", on February 27th, the day before the attack on Iran, after deducting store discounts and fuel taxes, the price of unleaded gasoline per liter for the five oil companies ranged from 15.63 to 22.73 yuan. As of March 17th, the five oil companies increased their prices to 17.03 to 24.13 yuan.
